Ancient History

Music has been an integral part of Dean Smith’s life for over 37 years. Early formal guitar instruction (under the direction of the late Harold Stover) laid a strong foundation for a lifetime of musical endeavors. Inspired by the continuous media coverage of The Beatles and the flashy bass line to The Monkees' I’m Not Your Steppin' Stone played by a fellow classmate on a borrowed guitar, Dean quickly excelled into the pop music era. By the seventh grade he was selected as guitarist for the newly formed Oley Valley High School’s Jazz Band which provided him with nearly six years of jazz performance experience. With his high commitment to guitar studies, Dean soon found his expertise in demand and inevitably started teaching fellow students and friends. His musical versatility would eventually lead to a broad base of performance and songwriting experiences in Christian Folk, Country, Rock, Jazz, and solo acoustic genres.

Dean’s improvisational guitar styles also attracted the interest of other songwriters and musicians, offering many opportunities in local recording studios. To further his talents, he attended the Jon Miller School for Recording Arts & Sciences in 1980-81.
